Wanyuri Project

September 2023 Wanyuri back to school project

September 2023 back to school project, as we all now September marks the start of the academic year in most countries. This is a period of stress for those parents who lack the means to afford school fees & school materials for their kids.Wanyuri has made it part of its mission to support these parents yearly.

Education & human right: The Preamble to The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, of 1948 states that: Every individual and every organ of society … shall strive by teaching and education to promote respect for these rights and freedoms.”
Over the years and as seen in Cameroon and other developing countries,

Sustainable and shared economic development increasingly depends on the capacity of governments to implement policies targeted at marginalized groups. Groups like these of Bonabome community in Douala. To remove barriers to education and entry into the job market later, a lot of improvements still needs to happen.

Significant achievements have been made over the past decade but women and girls still have the least access to education and training. This is where civil societies like Wanyuri come in, to drive policy changes in favor of these marginalized groups.

Statistics from around the world and not just Cameroon have shown that those who dropout of school at an early age are vulnerable to unemployment, poverty, early marriage, and pregnancy.

We have seen in recent years with the ongoing instability in Cameroon that school drop-out rates is being fueled by poverty, gender, disability, family catastrophes, war and conflict, as well as perceived low return on investment for education.

Developing alternative learning opportunities like the Wanyuri development training center which took into account these factors for high drop-out rates before the training center was lunched. Training centers like these are necessary ways to provide young people with appropriate opportunities to consolidate their basic knowledge and competencies, equip them with the relevant skills needed to obtain employment or become business owners and entrepreneurs or engage in other productive work.

Let’s now dive into what Wanyuri organization has been able to do to promote education this 2023 academic year and during our president’s visit to Cameroon, her country of birth.

Wanyuri has made it part of its mission to support these parents yearly. This year we decided to do things a little different. We raised funds and sponsored the boots2school initiative of “I’m human” executed by Wanyuri-Cameroon & “I’m human” volunteers. Beneficiaries of this initiative were close 200 impoverished children and mostly internally displaced children living within a mushy and swampy inaccessible Bonabome community in Douala as you can see in the video here.

Most of the parents to these kids have no employment & most live “hand to mouth”. These community is in high need of clean & safe drinking water & mosquitoes nets alongside first-aid boxes as most of the people still have wounds & injuries sustained during the war & their escape from their villages to this area.

To support the education of these children, we launched the “Wanyuri scholarship program” with the objective to provide the best performing first  of each class their school fees for the next academic year.

This school will receive school fees grants from Wanyuri and it sponsors yearly.
