Kumbo - Banso Cameroon: Get to know where Wanyuri operates.

Maak kennis met waar vzw Wanyuri actief is in Kameroen. Wanyuri operates in under privileged communities in Cameroon. Cameroon lies between Nigeria, Chad etc. There is a tropical temperature (25-40 degrees) throughout the year. Unlike in the big cities, there is lack of water supply, schools trainings and general necessities.

There are more than 24 million inhabitants in Cameroon. 79% of children from under privileged families are not registered at birth. Often because they do not have money for the birth certificate. Children from these families often from a tender age of 5 are used for child labor, to help their families and parents. Children between the ages of 5 and 11 work at least 28 hours a week. Children between the ages of 12 and 14 work about 42 hours a week. Often these parents or relatives have no other means or alternative to send these children to school and this is where Wanyuri now comes in with support to empower and change the narratives of these children.

Kumbo is the capital of Bui department and the second largest city in the Nord-Ouest region of Cameroon. People in this region live in difficult conditions and it has become worse since the "Boko-haram crisis" and the "Anglophone Crisis" .There is a lot of poverty, hunger, a lot of illiteracy, unemployment, difficult access to hospitals, clean drinking water and Sanitation. The city is 630 km² in size. Kumbo is about 110 km from Bamenda (capital of the Nord-Ouest region) and about 1,800 km above sea level. The total population is about 127,638 and consists of 53% women and 47% men, spread over 43 villages.

The main spoken language in the Kumbo/Banso region is Lamnso (an indigenous language), although other languages such as English, French and Pidgin are also common in the region. Kumbo borders Nkum to the north, Mbvem to the east, Jakiri to the south and the Oku sub-departments to the west, so other ethnic languages such as Oku, Mbiame and Kom are also prevalent in Kumbo.

The largest settlements in Kumbo are the Kimbo area with a population of over 6,164 people and where the Nso administration, the cathedral and the Presbyterian Church are located, the Tobin area (population of about 9,800 people) which is also called the administrative area, the Mbveh area (population of about 7,408 people) which is also called the commercial area of Kumbo and finally the Shisong area (population of about 7,048 people) which has the only heart center in all of Central Africa.

Kumbo is the capital of Bui Department and is administratively managed by a Senior Divisional Officer appointed by the Head of State and the Divisional Officer. Kumbo has a court of first instance where all criminal and other crimes are tried.

The population of Kumbo consists mainly of farmers and pastoralists. Fertile soils and rich flora allow crops such as maize, beans, plantains, groundnuts, Irish/sweet potatoes, bananas, cocoyams, etc. to be harvested. Animals such as cows, goats, sheep, pigs and poultry can also be raised there.
