It was a rainy morning of Saturday, September 25, 2021, when more than 150 IDPs from the Northwest and Southwest regions of Cameroon gathered at the Wanyuri Training Center Yaounde, Cameroon. The purpose of this meeting was to move to the Margarita Holistic Health Center in Odza for a post-traumatic counseling event organized by Wanyuri Foundation in collaboration with Margarita Holistic Health Center and ASCOVIME.
These organizations recognized the importance of counseling and general health care for this group of people and thought it wise to reach out to them and share the love.
Despite the muddy road and heavy rainfall, the internally displaced people understood the importance of this event and showed up en masse.
The event started at 10am with the preventive measures against Covid-19 fully implemented (hand disinfection, sharing and wearing of face masks) and registration. The coordination was great.
More than 15 experts were invited, ranging from pastors to pastors, psychologists, social workers, doctors, dentists, ophthalmologists, counselors and more. This was to ensure that the needs of these people were met.
Beginning with a word of prayer, Pastor Naela invoked the presence of the Holy Spirit to take charge of the day's activities and make them a success. Before that, the master of ceremonies welcomed everyone and assured them that they were at home and should feel at home.
The President of the Marguerita Holistic Health Center was present at the event a jovial woman who wanted nothing more than to see a smile on everyone's face starting with a song. It was time to shake off the stress and problems as she started singing and urging everyone to work together. Everyone participated and this made them happy.
The event cannot go ahead without experts hearing from these IDPs to better address their concerns. This was a sad moment as they told their stories. Everyone got too emotional. From their experiences it could soon be deduced that they urgently needed psychological counseling. Leaving everything in an unfamiliar city with language barrier is enough to traumatize them. Of all the stories, Mrs. Mary's was very heartbreaking. Her husband was shot in the leg and arm while they were on the run. They succeeded and left the village with nothing but the dresses they were wearing. No house, no food, no money. She became a sergeant and used a razor blade, operated the husband's leg and arm, and removed the bullets.
Imagine sleeping in a city like Yaounde (the capital of Cameroon) with no doors and windows. Mrs. Evangeline told how her landlord removed her door and window because she didn't pay her rent.
At this point, after listening carefully to their concerns, experts (Reverend Fathers, Reverend Pastors, social workers, counselors, and the rest) took the lead and did what they knew best by telling them how to cope in a new city, how to get rid of the past and look to the future, always starting the day with God and doing everything possible to succeed in the new city. Many lost their lives and couldn't make it to the event, so living and being present on that day was enough to be thankful for.
After all the encouraging words from experts and organizers of the event, the atmosphere changed as many felt different. Those who thought they were in trouble felt like celebrities. Big smiles on the faces of this vulnerable group of people, especially during lunch and when important gifts were distributed. The group photos show it all.
To top it off, there were one-on-one counseling sessions with the experts, prayers and consultations. Those in need of prayers visited pastors, those in need of counseling, counselors and psychologists (although many were healed just after hearing stories about other people), those with health problems visited doctors, had their consultations, and were given medicine. Dentists and ophthalmologists are not left out. All these departments ensured that every IDP present was different, with a very different mindset in mind that they have a shoulder to cry on. This was the pinnacle of it all..
Words of gratitude were heard everywhere “Thank you Wanyuri Foundation, Thank you M2HC, Thank you ASCOVIME“.
The WANYURI Foundation was delighted to see that the goal for which the event was organized was achieved. Giving makes you beautiful.
